Our Story: How a tour company grew out of a Kerala backwater village

S Krishna Kumar

Managing Director

Mr.Kumar, you are a very lucky person having been born in such a beautiful part of the world. Incidentally, I have just returned from a lovely holiday at Kumarakom

I vividly remember that moment. An immigration staff at Heathrow Airport (London) had just seen my passport and couldn’t contain her excitement. The ‘Place of Birth’ column on my passport showed ‘Kumarakom’ and it appeared to inspire some really warm memories. It was my first encounter with praise for my village, a place which, till that point of time, I believed to be godforsaken. This curious little incident was the ‘aha moment’ which led to the inception of Indus Holidays. Let me share with you my personal journey and the story of Indus.

Our Journey: Crafting memories and other conversations

As we write this, Indus Holidays' services have been used by 1000’s of travellers from 25 odd countries and we have been listed among the best in the business in this region. We have also expanded into the ownership and management of resorts and multiple responsible tourism ventures. Read on as KK (our founder) runs us through his memories on how he did it. These are the broad sections below, you can click directly to your section of interest or scroll to start. It all starts at the backwater village of Kumarakom.

My background: How I travelled to 65 countries

The Kumarakom of my childhood was very different from the beautiful land the world knows today. It was common to see some of my classmates falling unconscious during the school assembly simply because they had had no food for the last few days.

I grew up with the reality that getting 3 square meals a day was indeed a luxury.

Despite the rampant poverty, the spirit of the land and its people in terms of celebrations, races and temple festivals kept our lives enriched. It was a lively community. My father, who was a small farmer, had the vision to see that education was the way out of the limitations of rural life. He loved me enough to let me free to learn rather than slogging in the farm. I spent my teenage years walking miles to college and spending hours in public libraries training myself to face the world beyond my village.

At the age of 21, I left my village for a job as a commercial banker to the city of Kolkata. This was my first time outside my village and the culture shock was in some ways fascinating. It got me curious to see and experience the Delhis, Agras and Chennais that I had read about in books. I made it a point to take off every weekend. Generally crashing at some distant cousin’s place, I would spend all my meagre savings on exploring the complex and diverse India.

Pure curiosity had first exposed the villager in me to the joys of travel. On a 6-7 year timeline, I backpacked my way through every nook and corner of India

Destiny had much bigger plans. Maybe it was my survival instincts that came from having grown up in the midst of adversity or the fact that I was plain hungrier than other city dwellers, my professional career also did well. Learning to make the inches count, over a period of 7 years, I landed myself in a profile as the project finance manager of a major international bank.

It was a major professional breakthrough in terms of opportunity and exposure. The profile afforded me a lot of international travel to both the developing and the developed world. This period of my life made for some real personal transformation.

Based out of London for over a decade, I mapped my way through different continents making the best of both professional opportunities and personal time. Friends used to joke that I had no feet only wheels!

My life's journey had taken me to 65 odd countries. Like every veteran traveller, I transformed to a person of culture, adventure and compassion. It was during my return from one such trip that I met the woman at the immigration office at Heathrow Airport. It was my ‘aha moment’. The warm feelings that an outsider had about my home land was really moving. The incident triggered some deep thoughts. Was I missing something?

Yes, a chance realisation had happened. For the first time in 2 decades, I found myself thinking of doing something meaningful at home. It struck me that, maybe, I was in a better position to appreciate the uniqueness of my motherland from a traveller's perspective and also understand the pulse of the locals being one myself. Armed with nothing but ideas, I headed to back to Kerala (India).

Rediscovering our roots: The initial days of Indus

In 1998, I relocated to my ancestral home in Kumarakom and spent some time exploring and rediscovering the backwater villages. The idea was to revisit those experiences that added colour to local life. A few like-minded youngsters joined in to form our core team. Our eyes were tuned to the gems that the village community lived with each and every day. We thought, if we could give access to these experiences it would be like treasure to the traveler.

Destiny had its role to play when I recieved a call from some friends in London who wanted us to organise their trip. The first opportunity to test our ideas (first clients), we made it a personal affair, invited them home and informally accompanied them for the for the entire trip like any local would. This was the humble beginning our our long-standing journey in the tourism space.

Our first clients were personal friends from my London days. I quickly realised that, purely because of my background, I was in this unique position where I understood traveller needs and local aspirations equally well.

I felt that this was going to make a critical difference in the value I provided as a travel facilitator. We spent our energies into developing unique experiences. Amongst our first unique offerings revolved around the snake boat races of Kerala. Our team initiated local partnerships and engaged communities so that travelers across the globe could join in the elaborate race preparation and cheer for a team while experiencing the race.

While giving travelers unforeseen access we were also able to supplement the incomes of the poorer sections of society living by the backwaters

The 'boat race experience' along with many of our culturally immersive tours on yoga/ayurveda, festivals and village life soon gained traction with tourists looking for unique backwater experiences. We wanted people to experience the best of the land and the venture became a vehicle to touch lives across all backgrounds. It was the fun experience of handling responsible tourism ventures in the Kumarakom backwaters that inspired us to move to Kochi and formally setup Indus Holidays in 2002.

Building the firm around our values

From the beginning, we believed that bringing a human touch to our cultural interactions would make all the difference between good and extra-ordinary. We wanted it to be part of the DNA of whatever we did. What if we could create experiences that would continue to play out in your mind long after the journey is over? This thought of giving a well-rounded, diverse and deep experience soon evolved into our travel philosophy:

Don’t merely visit as a passive tourist, come, connect with all your senses and absorb the destination like an insider
