The Sadya, a kind of traditional vegetarian lunch feast served on a banana leaf is probably the most comprehensive meal you will ever have. The serving is part of the experience, first the crispies come in –Upperi (banana chips), Sharkaravaratti (jaggery coated banana chips) and Pappadam followed by the tangy, spicy pickles. Watch out for a range of side dishes flowing into your leaf like Kurukku Kaalan – thick gravy with yam and pepper, Avial (mixed vegetable coated in coconut) and Oolan (white curry with pumpkin base). Now the famous red rice of Kerala is served on the lower half of your leaf. It is your cue to start, as curries like parippu and sambar (definitely something to look out for) flow in. You are expected to eat with bear hands as you mix up all the curry and dishes to enjoy the meal.

Experience the charm of this North Kerala Village with your local guide. This half a day trip takes you through the narrow alleys, farms and countryside of Nileshwar. You will get a chance to watch fishing, mussel farming etc and also interact with the locals.

It is a dance drama and presents the story of Krishna in a series of eight plays. Daily night performances are hosted at Guruvayur temple as an offering by devotees. The costumes are vibrant, sometimes the performer uses colorful masks made of wood. There is no dialogue in this dance drama, it flows as per the Sanskrit recitations, body movements and gestures.

Popularly known as ‘Mithai Theruvu’, S.M. street or Sweetmeat street is a major local shopping hub in Calicut. Centuries ago, Zamorin of Calicut invited Gujarati halvayis (sweet manufacturers) to set up their shops in this street, which is right outside his palace. Thus Mithai Theruvu came into existence. Known for halvas and chips the street today has shops selling everything from sweets to handicrafts and textiles.

A medium intensity 3-4 hour trek takes you to a breathtaking landscape. Clear days offer a panoramic view of Periyakulam and Vaigai Lake. Also take a detour to the small village of Vellagavi.
